2024 Early Californios Skills of the Rancho
Stock Horse Class
Dry Work by Division

The Dry Work is one of three phases the make up the Stock Horse Class.   In this phase, riders will be showcasing their ability to perform a set of maneuvers that are compiled into a pattern. These maneuvers are basic skills often required while working horseback. Below are lists of possible maneuvers that could be required under each individual division. Actual course pattern will be released approximately 30 days before the event.  All courses will contain some number of obstacles one might expect to encounter during a normal days’ work on the ranch.

Judges Criteria for the Dry Work:

  • Clear and kind communication between horse and rider

  • Precision and accuracy of maneuvers in accordance with level and division

  • No disqualifications for going off pattern, deduction will be reflected in final score.

  • The pattern may be the same for several divisions and or classes. Subsequently, the judges will adjust the scoring criteria based upon the expectation of a horse’s and/or rider’s abilities advancing as they move through the stages of the California Bridle Horse system.

  • Advanced classes should show increased accuracy, efficiency and ability to handle cattle at higher rates of speed while maintaining the utmost levels of stockmanship and horsemanship.

Scoring:

Each maneuver will receive a score of 0-5 with 0 being non-completion of the maneuver and 5 being the highest quality achievement of the maneuver. There will be an additional + or – up to 10 points available for horsemanship, as well as + or – up to 10 points available as Judge’s discretionary points to be used as they see fit.
