Making Mulch

Mulch Bins and Screen

If you have horses, you have an excellent potential source of high quality mulch. We built mulch bins using 6’ x 6’ landscape timbers we purchased relatively cheaply from Arizona Highway Safety Specialists in Chino Valley. The 3-sided bins are roughly 5’ x 5’ x 6’ ( the opening is wide enough for my tractor bucket). To the fresh horse manure, we add dirt, sand, brown material (e.g., leaves, dead gress, etc.), green material (e.g,. beet tips garden waste, etc.) and appropriate kitchen scraps. Once a bin is full (and while it is filling) we water and turn the mulch regularly. After about 3 months of cooking the mulch is ready; you can screen it (optional) for fine mulch. Great stuff for gardens and landscapes.
